Tempered, laminated or wired glass: safe options

It is important to know that there are safety glasses to protect people at home as well as in public places. We offer our expertise for the installation of the three most commonly used types of safety glass: tempered, wired, and laminated glass.

Tempered, laminated, and wired glass are said to be safety glasses because of their specific properties that make them stronger and less dangerous if broken. Indeed, not only are these types of glass more resistant than ordinary glass, but if they are broken, they fragment into small, non-sharp pieces or remain stuck with a safety film, thus reducing the risk of injury. These types of glass are recommended in areas where safety is a priority, such as for glass railings, partitions, building facades, glass shower or bathtub doors.

The different types of safety glasses

Tempered, laminated or wired glass, what’s the difference?

Tempered, wired and tempered glass are all types of safety glass, but they differ in their manufacturing method and specific properties. Each offers unique strength and safety benefits, depending on the application.

Tempered Glass

Tempered glass is made by a process of heating to a high temperature followed by rapid cooling, making it up to five times stronger than ordinary glass. If broken, it fragments into small, blunt pieces, reducing the risk of injury. It is often used for doors, partitions and display cases, where strength and safety are paramount.

Laminated glass

Laminated glass is made of several layers of glass glued with a PVB safety film. In case of breakage, the pieces remain stuck to the film, preventing the dispersion of dangerous shards. It is often used for car windshields, railings and windows of buildings, providing both safety and sound insulation.

Wired Glass

The broached glass is reinforced with a wire mesh built directly into the glass, allowing it to stay in place if broken. This type of glass is ideal for applications where additional fire or impact resistance is required, such as in warehouse windows, fire doors or industrial partitions.

Cutting tempered glass

The cutting of tempered glass, wired and laminated glass has specific characteristics due to their manufacturing processes and safety properties.

In the case of tempered glass, it is important to know that tempered glass cannot be cut or modified after the tempering process. Any attempt at cutting after heat treatment will result in the glass completely disintegrating into small fragments. Therefore, cutting of tempered glass must be done before the tempering process. This means that all dimensions, special cutouts (such as for door handles or electrical outlets) and edges must be planned and made in advance.

In the case of wired glass and laminated glass, cutting is possible, but more complex than for a custom-made standard glass. Specific tools are required for this cutting, and the process must be carried out with care to avoid damaging the glass structure or compromising the safety of the installation.

To avoid any problems with cutting tempered, wired or laminated glass, we offer a measuring service upstream of your project, before proceeding with the cutting and installation.
